What I learned about business from Broom Corn

What I learned about business from Broom Corn

What do you need to delegate so you can claim your CEO title?

We harvested the Broom Corn last week.

A magnificent specimen, growing to nearly 20-ft high & crowned with feathery tassels, Broom Corn is actually a member of the Sorghum family.

True to its name, however, it is used to make straw brooms.

And since my other car is a broom, I’ve been growing it & making brooms for about 5 years.

I have also been helping entrepreneurs take flight in their businesses for more than 30 years.

I’ve learned some important business lessons from Broom Corn.

  1. Perfection causes paralysis

  • The first year I grew Broom Corn, I had a vision of making artisanal brooms worthy of hanging above the mantle.

  • Having never made a broom, however, this ideal kept me from even attempting to make one for a couple of years.

  • When I first learned about things like a “call to action” that would trigger an “email funnel” I got hung up on selecting the “perfect” email marketing platform and trying to manage it all myself.

  • After many months of successfully not launching any email campaigns, I hired help and have been soaring since.

  1. No one really flies Solo

  • Making my own brooms falls into the dangerous category of DIY that feeds the “self-sufficiency” fantasy that many homesteaders use to justify their efforts.

  • If spend my days making mediocre brooms I wouldn’t get much else done.

  • Being a solopreneur does not mean I have to do everything that makes my business hum.

  • The day I hired a bookkeeper was the first day I started claiming my role as “CEO” instead of being a “self-employed person.”

  1. Don’t get bewitched by with someone else’s idea of success

  • 20-ft tall broom corn is impressive, but I only use the top 12 inches for brooms; the rest goes into the compost pile.

  • As I grew my team to 7 full-time people, I was enchanted by the model of “bigger is better.”

  • But the more staff members I added, the more distant I was from the client work I loved.

  • Over time I became more of an administer than a coach and it was not a good use of me.

  • About a year later we moved our offices and for various good reasons my entire staff had left the company.

  • That’s when I go very clear about and claimed my vision for success.

Where are you attempting to be perfect & letting it stop you from making progress?

What do you need to delegate so you can claim your CEO title?

Who’s idea of success are you chasing?
