Seeds of Wisdom: What the Easter Bunny Taught Me About Business
As I was collecting eggs this morning from my chickens, a brave bunny bounded across my path.
Since Spring is in full swing here, it had me quickly musing on the story of the Easter Bunny and why the harbinger of Easter Eggs is a bunny, not a bird.
Turns out, Oestra (aka Eostre), the goddess of Spring, is the unsung heroine in this story.
As Winter melted into Spring, Oestra discovered an injured bird on the edge of the forest. When she was unable to heal the bird, she transmuted the creature into a rabbit so that it could live on.
Since the rabbit retained her bird-like qualities, she still carried traces of her origins within. And that’s why the Easter Bunny, not the Easter Chicken, creates a nest and lays her eggs in the Springtime. Now, we send children into the fields to search for her eggs on Easter morning.
This story reminded me of the kind of shape shifting I see in serial entrepreneurs. No matter how many times they reinvent themselves, the founder’s “Business DNA” is key to the success or failure of each enterprise.
That’s the power of your S.E.E.D. Code™. Even if your Shape changes from a bird to a rabbit, your underlying nature must be given a pathway to express itself.
Your Essence is the core nature of how your business expresses your strengths, values, and way of creating impact. It reflects the natural energy, approach, and experience that makes your work feel authentic and powerful — both for you and for the people you serve.
In my experience, the more vibrant and fertile the ecosystem is, the more naturally your marketing message is infused with your signature approach. Creating the environment that showcases your Essence attracts more of your ideal clients.
Recognizing your Essence is one of the most powerful steps in accessing the power of your S.E.E.D. Code™.
Realign With Your Essence
If your Essence is the fundamental character of your work — the qualities, strengths, and way of engaging that makes your business feel natural, aligned, and distinctly yours, it’s imperative that you understand it and bring it forward in all of your communications.
In practical terms, Essence answers questions like:
How do I naturally create value?
What qualities show up consistently in my best work?
What do clients experience when they work with me?
On the surface these questions may feel easy to answer.
But we are too close to our Essence to truly recognize it.
We all need an outside perspective to help us see what we are missing.
Remember you can’t see the label on the jar from inside the jar.
How Do You Naturally Create Value For Your Clients?
If you have ever assumed that “of course everyone knows that” and then discovered that hardly anyone does, you have a big clue about the value you bring. Clients from years ago often quote gems of wisdom back to me. Most of the time, I don’t even remember saying those things. That’s because they come from my Essence.
Your value may come from the wisdom gained by lived experience, your approach to problem solving, the way you can explain complex technical issues in relatable terms, or your ability to mobilize a team and achieve results.
Start paying attention to the first few questions new clients ask or the kinds of insight your peers seek from you. These are clues into the natural value you create for your clients.
Your Essence is already spilling forth. Bringing it into the foreground intentionally allows you to own the real power of what distinguishes you from all the other coaches, trainers, and consultants.
What Qualities Show Up Consistently In Your Best Work?
Pay attention to the praise you receive. Listen to how your peers and friends introduce you to others, look through your last 10 client testimonials, or think about the kinds of things you were rewarded for in any previous position you held.
If you are willing to look at the collection of kind words as data, rather than judgment, you will quickly see certain words, phrases, and sentiments rise to the top. You don’t have to lead with these qualities in your marketing materials, but if you allow your marketing message to steep in these qualities your best-fit clients will seek you out for them.
What Do Clients Experience When They Work With Me?
Make it a practice to conduct “exit interviews” with your clients and be sure to ask them what their “experience” with you was like. Beyond the results they achieved, how was it for them to work with you as their trusted advisor, coach, or trainer?
Follow with questions that help you understand the emotional shift they experienced. What is the transformation they felt? Overwhelm to calm? Uncertain to clear? Stuck to energized?
Your Essence shapes the experience of the journey, not just the results. Remember, it was, is, and shall always be present. Bringing it intentionally into your language shortens the time between “I’m curious” and “when can we start?.”
The origin story of the Easter Bunny reminds us that transformation does not erase identity. The bird became a rabbit, yet it still carried something of its original Essence within it.
Entrepreneurs evolve in much the same way.
Businesses may change shape over time, but the Essence that makes them thrive travels with you — one of the foundational elements of your S.E.E.D. Code™.
What part of your work remains constant, no matter how your business has evolved?
