I harvested the first tomatoes last week. Soon my dining room table will be filled with baskets of tomatoes vying for my attention. We also brought in a basket of eggplant, early squash, & peppers. August is the time of year when the veggies with seeds on the inside come ripe. The foods that will sustain our bodies through winter while rewarding us for our dedication to the humble act of growing our own food. And I have learned some important business lessons from these fruits of my labor.

The Crow Brothers broke our agreement last week. We made this accord some 10 years ago when more than 25 crows made my garden their summer home. Crows quickly shift from pranksters to marauders when their numbers surpass three. I promised them that I would keep my sense of humor about their antics if they kept their numbers low. There is a gang (aka a murder) of 6 crows in the garden now.

We turned the compost pile last week. Each year we pile all our garden refuse onto a different raised bed. Once or twice a year, we sift the fully decayed from the not-quite-there organic matter & distribute the loamy black gold throughout the garden. Whatever doesn’t pass through the screen gets tossed onto a new compost pile. I have been creating my own rich compost for more than 25 years.

I’ve relocated several snakes from the garden paths this past week. Snakes in the garden are a sign that we are more than half-way through the growing season. The slugs come early in the season, leaving their slime trails on the edges of raised beds as they seek tender seedlings. Soon after, the toads hop across the fence line to feast on the abundant slugs.
