What I learned from a Pallet of Cocoa Shell Mulch about business

What bygone version of yourself is keeping you stunted?

I received a pallet of Cocoa bean shell mulch last week.

Something rearranged inside of me when I started ordering supplies by the pallet.

One week I was buying 2 bags of potting soil at a time and the next week I was guiding tractor trailer trucks down my driveway to unload burgeoning pallets of mulch, potting soil, and other garden amendments into my barn.

In the process, I expanded my capacity to manage abundance.

I have been making room for pallets of goods for about 25 years.

I have also been helping entrepreneurs expand their idea of how much they can charge, the size of groups they can successfully facilitate, and how to build a team for more than 30 years.

I have learned a few important business lessons from making room for abundance.

  1. Having a compelling vision helps me prioritize daily and weekly goals.

  • The first garden I built as an adult expanded by commandeering bits of the lawn in our tiny backyard as I needed more space.

  • When we moved to a house with 5 acres in Williston in 1998, I needed a grand plan to guide me in transforming open field into a productive garden.

  • I remember feeling successful in business when my calendar was full for the next week.

  • When I decided to grow my business beyond a series of gigs, however, I needed to create a strategic plan with clear annual, quarterly, monthly, and weekly goals and my business has grown to meet the vision.

  1. Blowing your concept of what’s possible is essential to your success.

  • Like a proud mama I took dozens of pictures of the bulging bowls of tomatoes I harvested from that first garden.

  • Last year, I harvested more than 100 lbs. of tomatoes and made enough sauce to last the year.

  • In the beginning, I did everything in my business – marketing, bookkeeping, admin, meeting with clients, and running to the store for office supplies.

  • When we expanded our team to include four consultants, an office manager, and an accountant, the hard working girl I was had to transform into a grown-ass woman CEO.

  1. When you love a resource, keep an abundant supply available.

  • Cocoa Shell mulch is the best mulch for keeping weeds down, letting water through, and maintaining even moisture in the soil; and it smells like chocolate!

  • I buy it by the pallet for two reasons - its less expensive & ensures that I have plenty.

  • I also keep an abundance of my favorite pens, pads of paper, 3-ring binders, and clips handy.

  • Buying them by the case or box means that my creative flow is never interrupted by lack of supplies.

How do you discern between being busy and growing your business?
